President Accepts Praise for Conkling Speech

September 12, 1863

President Lincoln writes former Massachusetts Congressman Josiah Quincy, president of Harvard University: “Allow me to express the personal gratification I feel at the receipt of your very kind letter of the 7th of September, and to thank you most cordially for its wise and earnest words of counsel.”   Quincy had written his “gratification & my gratitude for your letter to the Illinois Convention.”
