A Slow Day at the White House

April 5, 1862

President Lincoln orders Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton to honor a military appointment promised the previous July by Oregon Senator Edward D. Baker, a longtime Lincoln friend who had died in October 1861 at the Battle of Ball’s Bluff.
