Washington Awaits News of the War

July 6, 1862

Concerned about the string of his communications with General George B. McClellan  confronting Confederate forces near Richmond, President Lincoln prepares to leave Washington to visit General George B. McClellan.  With his usual humility, General McClellan has written: “Tomorrow [July 6] will probably determine the fate of the country — I expect to be attacked by greatly superior numbers & hope to beat them.”
