McClellan confronting Confederate forces near Richmond, President Lincoln prepares to leave Washington to visit General George B. McClellan. With his usual humility, General McClellan has written: “Tomorrow [July 6] will probably determine the fate of the country — I expect to be attacked by greatly superior numbers & hope to beat them.”
